More ..Bellingham State of Mind Video

I just saw this in the Bellingham Herald.  It tells of the success of that great video that I posted yesterday.  Thank you Dean Kahn for your great information about the Bellingham State of Mind video.  It even includes the words if you want to sing along.  I just love my town!

'Bellingham State of Mind' video becomes huge viral hit

DEAN KAHN - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Just a week ago, only a few hundred people had gone online to YouTube to watch Nathan Cox's new music video, "Bellingham State of Mind."

By Friday afternoon, Sept. 17, the video was one of the hottest music items on the monster website, with more than 85,000 viewings.

"It's uniting Bellinghamsters here and everywhere," said Cox, a 26-year-old Western Washington University graduate. "It keeps going."

Indeed it does. Cox and his video are the digital talk of the town. People across the country and overseas from Australia to Namibia have watched it, with thumbs-up comments piling up at YouTube.

On Thursday night, Sept. 16, Cox and Rashawn Scott, who sings with him on the video, made a guest appearance at the 15th anniversary celebration at Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro. As Cox and Scott sang, the large crowd in Boundary Bay's beer garden whooped and cheered, bounced in place, danced and sang along to the chorus:

In Bellingham, the city of subdued excitement

Our streets keep you spellbound, Now you're in Bellingham

We're at the top of the Puget Sound, Here everything's going down

Let's hear it for B-ham, B-ham, B-ham

Cox's video pairs the rhythmic, driving music from "Empire State of Mind" - a hit song about New York City by rapper Jay-Z and singer Alicia Keys - with his own lyrics.

Consider it a 4-minute, 42-second homage to Bellingham, with rap lyrics and full-color filmed footage about things close to Cox's young, hipster heart - such as the Wild Buffalo, Pickford Film Center, The Upfront Theatre and KUGS radio station.

Yeah, yeah I'm on that Holly Street, Now I'm down at Railroad

Right next to Ryan Stiles, The Upfront forever

I'm the new Dirty Dan, Yeah he used to smuggle beer

and since he made it here, Boundary Bay makes it here (Scotch Ale!)

But Cox goes deeper by including words and scenes that honor Whatcom County's natural beauty, and such iconic locales as Mount Baker Theatre, The Bellingham Herald building and Old City Hall. Older people, myself included, can dig it.

"It's a song that, potentially, will last for a while," Cox said. "Chuckanut's always going to be there; Whatcom Falls isn't going anywhere."

A graduate of Ferndale High, Cox was in New York when "Empire State of Mind" came out. He knew that YouTube was soon flush with "State of Mind" spinoffs and parodies, including ones about Cleveland, Tasmania and President Obama.

As a theater major at Western, an improv actor and a deejay with connections in the Bellingham arts scene, Cox decided to give it a try himself.

"I thought I could write one for Bellingham," he said. "Bellingham has such a unique spirit to it."

He wrote the lyrics during a four-hour visit to The Woods Coffee downtown, and then asked Scott, a friend from Western, to sing with him.

Taylor Holtzheimer, a musician friend who performs as T-Bone Taylor at The Archer Ale House in Fairhaven, recorded the song in July. Chris Patton, a filmmaker friend, directed the video.

Filming and editing took about eight days, spread over a month. Cox posted the video at YouTube last Monday, Sept. 13.

Since then, it has been a tidal wave of interviews, appearances, congratulations and ideas for other projects.

"I'm excited to see what doors open up," Cox said.

Scott, a 21-year-old senior at Western majoring in theater, grew up in Tacoma, but said her time living in Bellingham and singing in the video will stick with her as she pursues her acting and musical interests elsewhere once she graduates.

"It was such a blast," she said. "I feel so blessed."

Bellingham has long had an unofficial slogan, "The City of Subdued Excitement."

Now it just might have an unofficial anthem, one much less subdued and much more exciting.

WHERE CAN I GET IT?

People can soon buy the song at cdbaby.com and at iTunes at apple.com/itunes.

LYRICS FOR "BELLINGHAM STATE OF MIND"

Yeah, yeah I'm on that Holly Street, Now I'm down at Railroad
Right next to Ryan Stiles, The Upfront forever
I'm the new Dirty Dan, Yeah he used to smuggle beer
and since he made it here, Boundary Bay makes it here (Scotch Ale!)

I used to go to Western, All my fellow Vikings
Right there up on High Street, Dreamed of what I might be
Dropped into my hot spot, 1211 State Street
Hot Russian dumplings, that's what they make me (Two Meats!)

Over to mi casa, Hombre que pasa
Potatoes and tequila, Celebrate La Raza (Potato Burrito!)
Me, I'm at the Fairhaven, Tunes by Seamus
Rockin' karaoke mics, Feelin' like I'm famous

Say what up to Nightlight, Damn you put up a fight
Now where's '80s night, 3B used to do it right
The Royal full of douche bags, Polos make me wanna gag
Know what I'm gonna do, Meet me at the Horseshoe ...

... In Bellingham, (Get me some of them cheese fries baby) the city of subdued excitement
Our streets keep you spellbound, Now you're in Bellingham
We're at the top of the Puget Sound, Here everything's going down
Let's hear it for B-ham, B-ham, B-ham

Catch me up at Baker with the Boarders smokin' halfpipes
Ski to Sea, finish line, All the teams getting hyped
Take my girl down for a walk on the Boulevard
What up to my people up on Texas where they live hard

Welcome to the West Coast, Sucka you can catch a jab
Try and act tough, You'll be leavin' in a Death Cab
Red Line, Blue Line, Sober Rovers, Holla back (WTA)
Mall full of Canadians, Cleanin' out the Macy's racks

Down at the docks, You can catch a ferry
Hittin' up Haggen for some Edaleen Dairy (MILK)
Donuts at LaFeen's on my way out to the lake
Stop in at The Woods for a mocha and some cake

At Whatcom Falls, you can join us cliff jumpin'
K-U-G-S always keeps the tunes bumpin'
Lemme hear the locals sing, Long Live Chuckanut
Long Live the Samish Twin, I'm from the Evergreen State that's ...

... In Bellingham, the city of subdued excitement
Our streets keep you spellbound (Big ups to El Capitan's), Now you're in Bellingham (Mallard's too)
We're at the top of the Puget Sound, Here everything's going down (Two scoops)
Let's hear it for B-ham, B-ham, B-ham

Sun is blindin' but only in the summer
Everybody's eco conscious, You'll never see a Hummer
One with the earth, Runnin' arboretum trails
Yo I gotta bring a snack, Baker's cookies never fail

You can join the in crowd, The hipster style
So many scarves and tights, You'll never see some skin out
American Apparel, They quote some Lewis Carroll
Everywhere I've been, The city's filled with them

Want some entertainment? Hit the Wild Buffalo
Or outside of Everyday, You can meet a Juggalo
At the Pickford all the films make the crowds roar
Big ups to my people who compete in Trailer Wars

Came here for school, Now I'm livin' up the good life
Mountains, Ocean, City got me feelin' right
Love for anyone that's in the Northwest
But the throne of Whatcom County is the absolute best

... In Bellingham, the city of subdued excitement
Our streets keep you spellbound, Now you're in Bellingham
We're at the top of the Puget Sound, Here everything's going down
Let's hear it for B-ham, B-ham, B-ham

One hand in the air for the small city
Rainfall on the streets all looking pretty
No place in the world that can compare
Put your coffee in the air, everybody say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

... In Bellingham, the city of subdued excitement
Our streets keep you spellbound, Now you're in Bellingham
We're at the top of the Puget Sound, Here everything's going down
Let's hear it for B-ham, B-ham, B-ham
